TIA TR-42 Telecommunications Cabling Systems Committee Meeting

It’s that time again (new year, new decade) and the Telecommunications Industry Association's (TIA) TR-42 (Telecommunications Cabling Systems) committee is holding its first meeting of Q1 2020 this week in New Orleans!

As a member of the TR-42 committee, I wanted to give you a preview of the subject matter of the meeting. At the risk of boring you with subcommittee titles, all of the TR-42’s subcommittee work items are in play this week as we start the new decade:

  • TR-42.1(Generic Telecommunications Cabling and Premises Cabling)
  • TR-42.3(Telecommunications Administration, Pathways, Spaces, Bonding and Grounding)
  • TR-42.5(Telecommunications Infrastructure Terms and Symbols)
  • TR-42.7(Telecommunications Copper cabling Systems)
  • TR-42.9(Industrial Telecommunications Infrastructure)
  • TR-42.11(Optical Fiber Systems)
  • TR-42.12(Optical Fibers and cables)
  • TR-42.13( Passive Optical devices and Fiber Optics Metrology)

Each group is responsible for the related work, i.e. specification and standards, under their specific groups.

There are numerous points of discussion, debate, and work being done across all the TR-42 subcommittees. Examples include:

  • Discussions across several FOTP-xxx’s (Fiber Optic Test Procedures) with the use of BIMMF fiber for Reference Launch Cables in various IEC and TIA standard documents
  • Reviewing ballot comments for the ANSI/TIA-568.0-E generic telecommunications cabling standard and ANSI/TIA-568.1-E commercial cabling infrastructure standard getting them ready to publish
  • Resolving comments on ANSI/TIA-568.5 single-pair cabling systems

What I’m most excited about is the work that was completed and will continue from the TR-42-12 Committee, who reasserted motions from June 2019 to ballot TIA-PN-5068 Draft TSB “Optical Fiber Channel Polarity; duplex-single and double row fiber” with comments.

The Committee plans to resolve these ballot comments at this January 2020 meeting. This is close to our hearts, as fiber optic polarity issues in data centers have always been of concern to the end user base of our industry and it has always presented challenges for such data centers on a daily basis.
