When purchasing new equipment, it can be easy to find yourself in a mess of cables if you don’t pay close attention to the project at hand. You will thank yourself later if you take a step back and spend time thinking about the best way to cable everything up! Trust me, you’ll be happy you did.
Recently, I worked with a organization that purchased three colors of CABLExpress mini CAT6 copper trunks – a bundled solution we offer in both CAT6 and mini CAT6 28awg – for their latest copper trunk project.
You might be asking yourself, “Why three different colors?”
The three different colors act as visual identifiers for anyone working in the data center. At first glance, it was easy to see what each cable connection represented – the different colors were for voice, data, etc. Each colored cable was then paired with a custom stagger and labeled on both ends of the trunk.
The organization ended up with a very nice solution that is now both effective and efficient for their data center.
First, the bundled solution allowed for a quicker installation time. After pulling a cable out, it was easy to identify the different lengths of the trunk legs and plug into the correct port the first time.
Custom labeling on each leg of the trunk also helped verify the correct leg had been plugged in.
Last, but also very important, the reduced diameter and flexibility of the mini CAT6 cables allowed for more airflow to the equipment and significant cable reduction.
As I said in the beginning, you will thank yourself if you take a moment to plan how to install your next cabling upgrade. Make use of the color labeling options your cabling provider offers. It will make installation and ongoing cable management much easier.
And as always, Respect Layer One!
